Expedentist. Surgeons Who Make You Smile

What is an Apicectomy?
An apicectomy is a surgical procedure undertaken on teeth that infections in the root but have already have a root canal treatment. Sometimes a repeat canal treatment has already been done or isn’t possible, in which case an apicectomy might be a suitable treatment for you to keep the tooth in your mouth and avoid having it removed.
An apicectomy to save your tooth
The residual infection in these teeth usually settle around the tip of the root. To remove it and help to save the tooth, we gently remove this root tip, as well as infection in the surrounding bone. We then fill the the root canal with a special filling material, and close the gum with dissolvable sutures. Your dentist will keep an eye on the tooth with x-rays after a few months to make sure the area has healed.

Is an apicectomy always suitable?
Not all teeth are suitable for an apicectomy, and you would need to have a consultation with us to ensure it’s the right treatment for you. Factors such as how fixable the tooth is overall, the supporting bone as well as how thorough the initial root canal treatment was will be assessed, and our surgeon will discuss all the treatment options with you to help you come to the most informed decision.
