What are Ectopic and Supernumerary Teeth?

Ectopic teeth are teeth that have found themselves in a place in the mouth distant to where they should be. It is not uncommon, and can sometimes lead to your other teeth getting stuck against them or being pushed out of place.

Supernumerary teeth are extra teeth that many people have in their mouths. Because there is already a full set of teeth in the mouth, there is not enough room for these supernumerary teeth and so they are often found in awkward locations.

Both of these types of teeth are not always a problem, but where they are pushing against your other teeth, they may be causing damage to them or preventing them from sitting in a favourable position.

Why do they need to be removed?

Your general dentist or orthodontist may recommend having an ectopic or supernumerary tooth removed if they are interfering with the position of your functional teeth, or causing an obstruction for orthodontic treatment. These teeth can also sometimes cause problems with teeth if they are impacted up against them, such as wearing away (resorption) of the tooth roots. The ectopic/supernumerary tooth is then removed in order to maintain the health of your erupted, functional teeth.
