What is an Apicectomy?
An apicectomy is a surgical procedure undertaken on teeth with infections in the root tip. Usually, infections such as these are treated with a root canal treatment. When a root canal treatment cannot remove all of the infection, or if a repeat root canal treatment is not possible, an apicectomy might be a suitable treatment for you to avoid having the tooth removed.
An apicectomy to save your tooth
Residual infection from the root canal system usually gathers around the tip of the root. To remove it and help to keep the tooth in your mouth, we gently remove this root tip, as well as infection in the surrounding bone. We then fill the root canal to prevent further infection, and close the overlying gum with dissolvable sutures. Your dentist will keep an eye on the tooth with x-rays after a few months to make sure the area has healed
Is an apicectomy always suitable?
Not all teeth are suitable for an apicectomy, and you would need to have a consultation with us to ensure it’s the right treatment for you. Factors such as how fixable the tooth is overall, the supporting bone as well as how thorough the initial root canal treatment was will be assessed, and our surgeon will discuss all the treatment options with you to help you come to the most informed decision.
