What is a coronectomy?

A coronectomy is when only the crown of the tooth (the white part that is usually visible in the mouth) is removed, and the roots of the tooth are left behind.

Why do we do Coronectomies?

The roots of lower wisdom teeth that need to be removed can sometimes be very close to the nerve that supplies feeling to the lower lip, chin and tongue; the inferior dental nerve.

Damaging this nerve can result in a change of sensation or numbness to the lower lip, chin or tongue, and so to reduce the risk of damaging this nerve, the roots are left in place and only the top part of the tooth is removed.

Can anybody have a coronectomy?

A coronectomy may be performed on wisdom teeth that are themselves healthy and are sitting closely with the inferior dental nerve.

It is, unfortunately, not possible to perform them on wisdom teeth that have any decay in them. These teeth will need to be removed completely, and our surgeons use advanced techniques in order to minimise risk to the inferior dental nerve.
