Complex Extractions
What Makes an Extraction Complex?
A complex surgical extraction refers to the removal of a tooth that cannot be easily extracted using routine or simple methods. These extractions typically involve a more detailed and involved procedure due to the tooth’s position, structure, or surrounding factors. In these cases, oral surgeons or specialists often perform the extraction.
Complications or Additional Risk Factors
- Infections: If there’s an infection or abscess around the tooth, extra care is needed to manage the infection during and after extraction.
- Proximity to Important Structures: For teeth near vital structures, like nerves (e.g., the inferior alveolar nerve), sinuses, or blood vessels, extra precautions may be necessary to avoid damage during surgery.
Factors that may warrant our Expertise
Tooth Anatomy and Position
- Impacted Teeth: These are teeth that have not fully erupted or are growing in an abnormal direction, often requiring surgical access. Common examples are impacted wisdom teeth (third molars).
- Severe Angulation or Position: Sometimes teeth may be tilted at an unusual angle, or they may be positioned too far back in the mouth, making them difficult to extract without surgery.
Bone Removal
- In some cases, the tooth may be embedded deeply in the jawbone. To extract such a tooth, the surgeon may need to remove some of the surrounding bone to access it.
Sectioning Of The Tooth
- If the tooth is large, has multiple roots, or is broken, the surgeon may need to section (split) the tooth into smaller pieces to facilitate easier removal.
Root Fragmentation
- If part of the tooth breaks off during extraction, the surgeon may need to carefully remove these root fragments, sometimes involving more precise techniques.
Soft Tissue Involvement
- If the tooth is beneath the gumline, the surgeon may need to make an incision in the gum tissue to access the tooth. Afterward, the tissue is usually sutured back together.
